People Measuring Freebie

Life & work are a little bit cr-aa-zz-y at the minute so my blogging has unfortunately come last on the list. But in amongst kinder to prep transitions, reports, assessment, class lists, working between two schools, etc, etc I have managed to make a freebie for you! We are exploring measuring again this week using non-uniform units such as counters, pop sticks & unifix. The kiddos have loved this!

I ended up sticking to the apple theme this week when I stumbled across this idea from the talented Mrs Jump.

3. Number Heads
My kiddos love playing Number Heads (number version of Celebrity Heads). We have been focusing on 2-digit numbers.

4. There was an Old Bloke Who Swallowed a Chook
We have been focusing on rhyming words this term and have so far read the books "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly/bat/pie". This week we read the Australian version "There was an Old Bloke Who Swallowed a Chook". They loved this! It's a very 'Aussie' version where the old bloke (man) ends up swallowing a ute (truck).

Pyrex dish- LOVE!

I spent a lovely Spring day last Saturday on a solo road trip to Ballarat to pick up a super cute apple stool that I purchased for my classroom next year (pics to come). I shopped along the way there and got the best finds. The telephone table was found in the Old Mill Markets in Daylesford in a stall hidden under a pile of stuff and it was CHEAP!

I found my Nally canisters at my first stop on the road trip at the local Vietnam Vet Garage Sale and bargained with the guy in charge (I got the pyrex dish & some others for free). They look so great in our kitchen! Plus I could sell them on ebay now for at least double- bonus.

To those peeps lucky enough to be celebrating Halloween this week (it's not really a 'done' thing in Australia) I wish you an awesomely spooky week,

Making Apples with Measuring

This week we are learning all about measuring using uniform and informal units. There is only so much measuring of objects around our classroom & school that I can handle but luckily I found this cute idea from Apples, Crayons & Caffeine. So we have been making apples!

We measured each strip using unifix instead of rulers. 

My kiddos were really into it! And they are completely cute and cheery in my room.

Freebie Friday: Measuring

This week we have been focusing on measuring length using informal units and the letter 'Ss'. Found this great Snowman Measuring idea from Mrs Plant's Press, so I very bravely got out the white paint to make these and because I was feeling lazy we finger painted them! I forgot to take pics so I have added Mrs Plant's pic instead for the moment but I will update these next week. We painted directly onto the blue card and then drew on the features the next day with crayons. 
And incase you were wondering it was 30C (86F) on the day we did this so the only link was the letter S not the weather but it never snows here so it didn't matter :)

Today we made Paper People by tracing around our bodies and then we measured these with pop sticks. Thank goodness we borrowed 12 Grade 6s for this so there were 2 little kids per big buddy. The big kids were so patient! They did all the tracing around the bodies after I demonstrated just drawing the big outline- around hands with fingers closed and around legs placed together. The kiddos then coloured these in (with texta which they hardly get to use so this was THE BEST lol) and then their buddies helped them measure these with pop sticks. We talked about 'good measuring' with no gaps before they did this and just measuring the height from head to shoes not covering the whole person in pop sticks!

I loved the Snowman idea but couldn't find the "My snowman is..." heading anywhere. Incase you were in a rush like me I have attached free headings for both the snowman and the paper people.
